About

Kyra Anderson is a homeschooling mother and writer living in western Massachusetts with her husband, writer/illustrator David Milgrim, their dog, Beegu, and their and 11 year-old Aspergian son, Tito, who loves potatoes, math, gaming, talking, absurdity, computers, and the nights when his mom puts him to bed because, he says, “Mom? It’s like you have a piece of my heart in you and when you’re with me, I’m with my whole body again.”

  1. Kyra, I stumbled upon your reference to THE SOUL OF AUTISM. I am hopeful that it is of good service to you.

My next title will be EMPOWERED AUTISM PARENTING: CELEBRATING (AND DEFENDING) YOUR CHILD’S PLACE IN THE WORLD.

  2. Hi Kyra,
I love your blog, do you mind if I put a link to it on the autism_dev_therapy yahoo! group? I am trying to organize informative blogs for parents to have easy access. BTW, I may have an idea about the bedtime ‘flickering’, if you would like to chat about it – do you have Skype?

Kyra, I found this and it is YOU!.

Well, so now I’m signed up, and maybe, ready to write.

    I already have several pieces.

Loved seeing you. Are you on vacation now? Do stay connected.

  5. I found your blog while looking for information about the Nurtured Heart approach. Thank you for sharing your journey. We have just started using the method with our son. Reading someone else’s encouraging words really gives us confidence to stick with it.

  6. Hi Kyra, I came across your blog, and I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve read. Check out mine if your interested. I have a visually impaired daughter.

  7. I’d like to contribute an idea for homeschool parents and their children.

My son, Colin, and I published two children’s books of humorous poetry that help to teach reluctant readers about the fundamentals of poetry while they have fun. Colin drew the wild illustrations when he was between 10 and 12 years old and I wrote funny poems to go along with the drawings. These books are particularly appropriate for homeschoolers, as they contain glossaries of poetic terminology and teaching guides in the back of each book. They are titled, “Coolhead Luke and Other Stories” and “On the Edge with Coolhead Luke”.

We’ve also created an interactive website for kids and I’d like to invite your readers to check it out! On our site, you’ll find some samples of our drawings and poems, and a poll to tell us which ones you like best. We also have a contest feature for kids who like to write poetry: we’ve posted two of Colin’s drawings, and invite kids to write poems to go along with them. The winning poet will receive a free copy of one of our books! There are also pages for parents and teachers in which we talk about the fantastic mother-son experience of publishing a book together.

You can find our blog at http://www.coolheadluke.com or order our books on http://www.amazon.com. Happy reading and writing!

    Hi Kyra,

I love your blog, very inspirational. We lived in Seattle for 3 years and we are planning to spend a few months on Bainbridge this summer. Do you know of any good resources in the area (Seattle or Bainbridge) for our 4 year old son who is on the spectrum?

    Thanks

  10. Kyra, Dave, Fluffy, Beegu (I’m gonna go trolling for the meaning of her name one day!) & 4 4 T (ok, there’s a story there as well)…..

I love your blog, Kyra. I love your writing style. I love how you obviously LIVE your life instead of hiding behind a blanket of woe because your child is different from other kids. I hate when people say to me: “Yeah, but he’s Autistic.” No. Well, yes. He is, but it’s still just as much MY life as it is HIS life. I’m molding him (trying to) to be able to LIVE his life while trying to scratch the mold from my life and live it…. with 2 other kiddos in tow!

    anywho.

Thanks. You’re an inspiration for normalcy and positivity.

  12. Oh that is seriously divine Kyra what Fluffy loves and the truth of his words are so profound “and the nights when his mom puts him to bed because, he says, “Mommy has that thing inside her that makes me feel safe.”

Some one I love truly madly deeply has the same level of truth and really that to me is one of the greatest gifts some one with this condition shares is a genuine truth ,,,,even on the hard days when they withdraw

  15. Hello Kyra,

I was reading your site regarding movement and your son and how it is sometimes difficulty to get him moving. I would like to send you a dvd for creative movement and see if this might help. Please contact me directly with your coordinates. I am fascinated to find out if this dvd would be effective with your son.

    Please contact me.

    sincerely,

  16. Hello Kyra,

Your writing style is delicious. I continue to find myself pulled into your world.

I am a mom with two young boys from Kamloops, British Columbia. I have created a collection of imagination-bolstering questions called Spark Story Starters. There are a number of local families with children with aspbergers that are using them with great success. I’d love to send you a package of the cards, as the intrinsic value of this project is seeing the cards used. If you would provide me with a mailing address I will send them your way.

  17. I am looking forward to reading Gravity Pulls You In. I am the mother who has been in battle and fighting every step of the way to get public funding for a 13 year old son with Autism. I need a breath of fresh air! Thank you for bringing it to light.

  18. Hi,

I don’t have your contact info. That’s the only reason I am using comment section. I am also a parent and really admiring you the way you are handling and taking care of your kid.

I have just started a ChildrenHaveTalent blog especially for children who are living with disability and/or health conditions. Here parents will be able to add their child’s talent in various categories like singing, painting, drawing and so on.
Please try to use this blog.
My main goal is to reach out all the parents so that they can start using this blog to give their kid a new horizon.
If possible please give me some feedback as a parent did you like this idea?

    Blog Name: Children Have Talent
    Blog URL: http://childrenhavetalent.blogspot.com/

    Thanks,

  19. Dear This Mom,
My name is Leahna Bundy and I’m trying to sell shirts about special needs to make ends meet. I was wondering if you would put a link to my shop on your blog. I’m aware that quite a few of my shirts would need explaining to someone who doesn’t know the day-by-day experiances of autism or bipolarness.

If you would like to get to know me and my family better I write on facebook.

I’m not a great writer, but you’ll get a better sense of who we are. I have 3 boys and my husband diagnosed with autism. I also have 2 nurotypical girls. Two of my boys also have other problems. One, the oldest, probably has some kind of mood disorder. The other has arthritis. Me working outside the home isn’t an option, so I’m trying to work online. Your putting the link on your blog would help me and my shirts might just might start some conversations.

    Thanks,
    Leahna Bundy

  20. Hi Kyra
My name is Ashley and I found your blog through Jeneil’s Rhema’s Hope blog. My husband Ryan is working on his PhD in Clinical Psychology and for his final project he is researching ASD in children. If you would be willing, could you fill out a really quick survey to help in this research? The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ASDStudy The survey is confidential and can be filled out once for each child with an ASD diagnosis. Thanks for your help with this research in advance. Contact me with any questions you have. Hope you’re having a good week :)

    Hi Kyra,

I loved the book you edited, Gravity Pulls You In. My 8-year old son Alex has PDD. As I read your introduction, I felt like I was reading a letter from a friend.

School is a continual battle with us as well, and we are currently debating if his neighborhood school is still right for him.

God bless you for rising to the challenge!

  24. Good afternoon,

My name is Allison and I am a Marketing major at a university in Ontario, Canada. I am presently conducting consumer insight research for a company that sells baby gear online. I simply wanted to ask you:
    1) Do you/have you bought Kids Gear online? (cribs, strollers, anything but clothing)
    2) What would/has motivated you to purchase kids gear online?
    3) Any additional comments

    Your help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you in advance,

    Allison

  25. Hi Kyra,
just discovered your blog while doing some research about autism and I really like your articles. I thought you and your folllowers might be interested in finding out more about a new ethical search engine in Canada. Bigheartedsearch.com donates money to charities, including children’s health ones, as users use it to search the web.

Thanks for this great blog and keep the good work.

I have a daughter whom I am considering homeschooling. We also do nurtured heart. She was just diagnosed with ADHD and ODD, and her doctor was concerned about parental burnout from homeschooling. I am concerned about her ability to participate healthily in school and get her needs, educational and otherwise, met in that setting. I would appreciate any insight.

  27. Having read this I believed it was rather informative.
I appreciate you taking the time and energy to put this
content together. I once again find myself spending a lot of
time both reading and commenting. But so what, it was still worthwhile!
